As part of the content team, the Field Editor is responsible for information collection and delivery and content creation in the Balkans. The Field Editor’s job duties include assessing information needs in close coordination with the IRC country program, then researching, vetting and producing accurate and updated content to be published on the Refugee.Info suite of communication channels. As the information focal point for the Balkans, s/he is also responsible for maintaining close communication and collaboration with IRC staff.
 
The Field Editor will be line-managed by the Refugee.Info Senior Editor, based in Belgrade. S/he is both a part of the Refugee.Info content team and works alongside the ICT (hardware/software) team. S/he works closely with the IRC staff, Mercy Corps field staff, and other partners to gather and verify information to be presented on Refugee.Info channels.
 
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
 
Content:
  • Develop and maintain an in-depth, nuanced understanding of the humanitarian context in the Balkans through staying abreast of reports and current literature, developing a network of internal and external contacts, attending working group and other meetings, and traveling to sites and other locations
  • Gather, vet, condense and otherwise organize content delivered from information focal points and partners in the Balkans for dissemination through Refugee.Info channels and to IRC programs
  • Research and create written, photo and video content for Refugee.Info pages, blog and social media, as assigned by Senior Editor
  • Regularly pitch ideas for new content and content updates to Senior Editor
  • Manage and enter content for the Refugee.Info site and blog into content management systems
  • Work with translators to ensure timely and accurate translations of content
  • Represent Refugee.Info in coordination and partnership meetings
  • Monitor traffic and other feedback
  • Help ensure accuracy of services listed on the Refugee.Info service mapping tool in the Balkans
  • Represent and/or promote Refugee.Info in interactions with partners and beneficiaries in the Balkans
 
Team Collaboration:
  • Ensure close communication and coordination among IRC program staff and between IRC staff and Refugee.Info
  • Collaborate with the content team to ensure consistency in information presented across all Refugee.Info platforms
  • Coordinate with the ICT team to ensure smooth operation of and feedback on the Refugee.Info website and other tools
  • Work with content team to ensure that content is aligned with the content strategy and appropriate for publication
  • Ensure all relevant IRC and Mercy Corps program staff are informed of and involved in the planning and dissemination of content
  • Use online tools and other modes of communication to consistently share information with other members of the content team
  • Participate in all content team meetings, workshops, strategy sessions, regular communications, etc., as established by the Senior Editor

Success Factors:
The successful Refugee.Info Field Editor is extremely proactive, detail-oriented and organized. S/he values accurate and error-free reporting. S/he is self-directed and reliably completes tasks. S/he is diplomatic and able to work with a range of peers to gather and verify information. S/he is tech- and social media-savvy and quick to learn new tools. S/he has a strong commitment to teamwork and accountability and regularly seeks opportunities for collaboration and thrives in evolving and ambiguous environments.
 
Knowledge and Experience:
  • BA/BS or equivalent experience in journalism, communications or other relevant field
  • 2-5 years of reporting, writing and editing experience, including for online platforms and social media
  • Video production and photo skills and advantage. Willingness to learn required
  • Excellent oral and written English skills required; Serbian desired
  • Native speakers of Arabic, Dari/Farsi, Urdu and/or Pashto encouraged to apply
  • High level of tolerance for ambiguity
  • Ability to learn quickly and proactively seek out information, assess trends/developments, and build relationships across diverse actors and contexts
  • Ability to work well both within a team and independently, in a challenging, fast-paced, multicultural environment
  • Ability to adapt journalistic ethics to a humanitarian context
  • Familiarity with humanitarian principles; familiarity with refugee and migration issues in Europe
Travel Requirements:
The position is based in Belgrade and will require regular (approx. 30%) travel in Serbia, Bulgaria, Hungary, FYR Macedonia and other locations as needed.
