‘Film Desires and Cine-phantasms’

Pavle Levi lecture explores modalities of the ‘cinema by other meanings’, radical cinematography that is not using normative film technology. Surreal photo-collage, ‘cinematography séances’ and experiments of Jean – Luc Godard, will serve us as examples for analyzing the structural, aesthetic and ideological functions of desire and phantasms in realization of various cinema effects.
Pavle Levi is lecturer of film history and theory at the Department of Art and History of Art at the Stanford University. He is author of the study Disintegration in Frames: Aesthetics an Ideology in the Yugoslav and Post-Yugoslav Cinema (Stanford University Press, 2007). The study was translated into BHS languages and published by ‘Biblioteka XX vek’ under title Raspad Jugoslavije na filmu in 2009. He has also edited a publication of Annette Michelson’s texts, Filozofska igračka (Samizdat, 2003). He is author of the numerous essays on European cinematography’s, film avant-garde and psychoanalytical media theory.
The lecture and discussion will be held in Mediacenter, Kolodvorska 3, Thursday, 4th of April at 6 pm. Moderator is Asaf Džanić, editor-in-chief of the film magazine 'SINEAST'.
