Documentary “The 50 Year Argument” (2014, 95 min.), dedicated to the American independent magazine “The New York Review of Books”, will be shown on January 19, Tuesday at 18:00 in Mediacenter Sarajevo, Kolodvorska 3.

The famous American film director, Oscar-winning Martin Scorsese, in cooperation with David Tedeschi, made a documentary on the occasion of 50th anniversary of publication of the magazine “The New York Review of Books”, as its loyal, years-long reader. Thanks to numerous world-known authors (Susan Sontag, Robert Penn Warren, Lilian Hellman, Norman Mailer, Saul Bellow), the New York Review of Books set up high standards of writing and reporting on the most recent world events and as an avantgarde magazine became a haven for many dissident writers (Václav Havel, Andrei Sakharov).

Highly circulated publication, the most controversial and the most respected periodical paper in America, gained a reputation with the provocative comments and reports on political and cultural events. To describe the uniqueness of that magazine, one of the most influential and favorite of its kind, was a big challenge for the authors of the film. Through the decades of history, from civic movements of the 1960s to the Arab spring in the 2000s, directors of the film remind us once again of the familiar political and social affairs that marked the past five decades.

The screening of the film “The 50 Year Argument” is organized within the fourth season of the programme successfully implemented by Mediacentar Sarajevo and Frontline Club London, with the financial support of the Media Program of Open Society Foundation London.

Entrance is free.
