Reporting on Judiciary and Security in B-H

Journalists from B-H broadcasters and print media are invited to apply for the first generation of the program “Analytical Reporting – Justice and Security in B-H.” The program will take place from April to July 2007 and is designed in a way that does not interrupt regular work in newsrooms. Participants will be better acquainted with investigative methods of analytical reporting on reforms of judiciary and security services in B-H. The organizer will cover participants’ full costs. Closing date for applications: 1 April.

This is a new program of support to investigative journalism in the fields of reform of judiciary and security services in Bosnia-Herzegovina aimed at helping editors and journalists to get to know these processes better and advance the style of reporting on the B-H judicial and security sectors. Journalists will advance investigative methods of analytical reporting in these fields and visit the most important institutions in these sectors (courts and security services) and learn about their work.
By participating in the program, journalists will contribute to promoting public dialog on security and judicial reforms in Bosnia-Herzegovina and learn more about legislation in these fields.
Three-and-a-half-month education will consist of two three-day workshops and distance learning (online learning). During the program, with trainers’ mentorship, participants will write investigative stories which will be published/broadcast by their media outlets. The articles will also be posted on the web portal www.netnovinar.ba.
The first workshop will be held on 17-19 April at Mediacentar Sarajevo and the second on 12-14 June 2007. The program is designed as a contemporary educational method suitable for journalists, which at the same time allows them to work on a daily basis in their respective newsrooms without interruption during education.
The lecturers will be Mehmed Halilović, Deputy Ombudsman on Media of the Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Rasim Čerimagić, lecturer and trainer in investigative reporting at the Media Plan College of Journalism, Sarajevo.
The organizers will cover participants’ travel and living expenses.
The closing date for applications is 1 April 2007. The application should contain:
• CV/biography of candidate (education, seminars, training) with personal information• Personal contact information for the candidate and contact information for the media outlet they come from• Written confirmation by the media outlet’s editor-in-chief committing that the outlet will publish/broadcast the candidate’s investigative story/TV/radio item made during the program• Personal news work• Letter of motivation (letter explaining the candidate’s motivation to attend the program, describing the candidate’s fields of interest and speaking about his/her professional goals)

During the year-and-a-half program on “Analytical Reporting – Justice and Security in B-H,” two three-day workshops will also be held, attended by 10 editors of B-H print media and broadcasters with the aim of supporting journalists in attending the program.
The organizer is NetNovinar – Center for Investigative Reporting and Media Education (founders: Mediacentar Sarajevo & Investigative Journalism Center, Zagreb)
